When Biofuel Stole Our Foods
Governments policies on biofuel and biodiesel probably contributed to world global foods crisis. US Government policy in biofuel by increasing etanol content in gasoline (which have been warned by Fidel Castro) critisized by US people as "....literally diverting food from the table to the gas tank”
Increasing demand for etanol had been diverting sugarcane, corn and maize to ethanol production. It increased the demand for foods and pulled the prices. CPO which was for producing frying/cooking oil had also been diverted to biodiesel production. It led to CPO price increase, then frying/cooking oil scarcity. Biofuels and biodiesel policies are not only diverting, it is "short circuiting" the cycles of foods, or even stole food from us.
This is not the only cause of foods crisis, of course. Peoples in countries like China and India now are demanding for better and much more quantity of foods, because of their substantial percapita income growth in last decade. On the other hand, practically no sufficient increase in foods production. Moreover, many developing countries are facing lesser and lesser agricultural areas for plantation.
In some places of Indonesia, due to increasing rice price, poor people have no other choice but eat "nasi aking" (wasted rice). Many Indonesian households fry foods using "jelantah" (used frying/cooking oil), Frying/cooking oil scarcity forced them to reuse same "jelantah" many more times (which possibly have became wasted frying oil) . Don't they deserve for better food? Aren't "Nasi aking" and "jelantah" more suitable for biofuels and biodiesel than for human food?
Why don't we consider biomass and biogas technology for generating energy, recycling wastes and stop stealing our foods?
